GSO Test

Through the delivery of PSHCE we aim to support and help students to make informed decisions about their lives. It is a planned curriculum area that contributes to students life chances, developing knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes, now and in the future.  It deals with real life issues which affect students and young people, their families and communities, and engages with the social and economic realities of their lives, experiences and attitudes.

PSHCE makes a substantial contribution to the development of a young person’s SMSC and the three Statutory Aims of the National Curriculum: Successful Learners, Confident Individuals and Responsible Citizens.

PSHCE covers all the aspects of a holistic education which contribute to the overall wellbeing and success of our students.

The acronym stands for:

  • Personal
  • Social
  • Health
  • Citizenship
  • Economic

Within these 5 strands, students will study - through a variety of media - units of work which are timed to complement their academic progress and personal development.

In Key Stage 3, students follow units of work which help develop social and personal skills such as Enjoying a Healthy Lifestyle, Money, Bullying, Personal Safety & The Law, Changing Family Networks British Values and Human Rights. There is also the opportunity to discuss Sexual Health & Relationships.

In Key Stage 4 the curriculum helps prepare the students for their transition into adulthood. Subjects include Self Image & The Media, Domestic Violence, Parenting and Preparation for Adult Life which will teach skills such as writing successful application forms and good interview technique.

The curriculum is supplemented by work with outside agencies wherever possible.
