Year 11 into 12 Transition

The school provides a wide range of subjects for students to support their academic aspirations, or to prepare them for work when they leave school. Links with local colleges, where the school’s students do well, are well managed.

We work hard to ensure that students leave Putteridge High School at 16, ready to continue their education, either at one of the local FE Colleges or in employment with training.  The large majority of students gain places at Luton Sixth Form College or Barnfield College, with others travelling to school sixth forms in Harpenden, Hitchin and Harlington or FE Colleges in Central Bedfordshire.  An increasing number are fortunate in securing an apprenticeship and continuing their learning while working.  Recently one of our ex students gained a fabulous opportunity to train as an F1 engineer at the Silverstone University Technical College in Northampton - much to the envy of her male peers.

Students are prepared for this next stage in their education by Mary Jankiewicz, our Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance Team Leader, she is an expert in her field and has an extensive network of links with further and higher education institutions, as well as with local employers and training providers.

Students are given opportunities to sample the world of work from Year 8, when they take part in the Take Your Child to Work day. During Year 9, students are supported through the options process with events, such as an apprenticeship evening, assemblies from local FE providers and opportunities to visit some of the colleges.  In Year 10, students have a 2 week work experience and many find their ideal career as a result of this experience - some even get offered jobs.

In Year 10 and 11 we encourage students to visit the college open evenings to find out about the courses that are on offer, we also arrange a careers fayre with Stopsley and Ashcroft Schools, held at Stopsley Baptist Church.

As part of the normal curriculum, students are encouraged to consider the kinds of jobs that scientists or historians for example, might engage in and trips and visits are also designed to expose young people to the various career paths that are available to them.
