We believe that at Putteridge High School all pupils should have the opportunity and encouragement to fulfil their potential in Mathematics. Our aim is to create interesting and purposeful lessons, which challenge the students and promote independent learning, resilience and confidence in their understanding and application of mathematics in the real world.
Pupils are taught in sets from Year 7. Each half term all students do an assessment, except when it coincides with their annual assessment. Sets are reviewed regularly depending on performance in class, homework and test scores and changes can be made at any time throughout the year. Regular analysis of progress and set changes ensure each student is placed appropriately and entered for the most suitable examinations.
The Mathematics department utilises a variety of teaching and learning styles including visual, auditory and kinaesthetic approaches. The department believes strongly that, within a basic framework, individual staff should be free to use the methods, which they find most appropriate for the class and the individuals within it. Learning will focus on the five key process in Mathematics; Repeating, Analysing, Interpreting, Processing and Communication.
The Mathematics department makes regular use of the ICT facilities in the school and all maths-teaching rooms have an overhead projector and an interactive white board. All teachers make significant use of electronic resources to enliven and add pace to the learning activities. Students are encouraged to use a variety of resources including books, computers, calculators and mathematical instruments to enhance their learning. There are also opportunities for individual, paired and group work. Students are also encouraged to reflect on their learning and progress at key points.
Students who find mathematics to be a difficult discipline are well supported, with a variety of early intervention offered especially for year 10 and year 11 students focussing on helping them to prepare for external examinations.
We aim for all students to leave us as numerate individuals who are ready for their lives ahead using mathematics confidently and competently wherever need arises.
Key Stage 3
Throughout the two years of Key Stage 3 we follow a scheme of work based on the objectives specified within the National Curriculum. Mathematics is taught in such a way that topics will be revisited from year to year with the skills required extended and deepened each time. Within the curriculum the students will be challenged by Investigations, Mysteries, Puzzles, Mental Agility problems, Functional Mathematics, Development of Key Processes, use of Thinking Skills and Application of Mathematics in the real world.
In Year 7 students will study the following topics; Fractions, Sequences, Perimeter, Area and Volume, Representing and interpreting data, Percentages, Algebraic manipulation, Properties of 2D shape, Probability, Ratio, Linear graphs, 3D shape and Analysing data.
In Year 8 students study; Percentages, Algebraic manipulation, Perimeter, area and volume, Scatter graphs and correlation, Ratio, Linear and quadratic functions, Angles, scale and bearings, Probability, Calculation and approximation, Equations an inequalities, Transformations, Analysing data, Integers, Powers and Roots, Introduction to kinematics.
Key Stage 4
Students begin studying for GCSE mathematics in Year 9 and follow the Edexcel 1MA1 syllabus, which will be tested with three examinations in June of their Year 11. The two different levels of entry within GCSE Mathematics are foundation (Grades 5 -1) and Higher (Grades (9 - 4). In the summer term, Year 9 and Year 10 students sits a formal internal exam, which will consist of all the elements taught throughout the course. Year 11 will sit formal internal mock exams in November and March.
During the course, the students revisit and extend their learning from KS3 in the five main areas of study:
- Statistics and Probability
- Ratio and Proportion
Throughout KS4 all students will be given opportunities to develop their skills in applying their knowledge to problem solving and practical tasks. In years 7 and 8 we offer entry into the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge for the most-able students in each year group. In years 9 and 10 this progresses to the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge.
